Biography Ryan J. Wheeler hails from Ft. Lauderdale where he developed a lifelong interest in Florida environment and history. He is a member of the Register of Professional Archaeologists, member and ex officio director of the Florida Archaeology Council, and former editor of The Florida Anthropologist. Dr. Wheeler has academic degrees from Florida Atlantic University and the University of Florida, where he earned a Ph.D. in Anthropology and became a member of Phi Beta Kappa honor society. He has published over twenty papers and monographs, including articles in The Florida Scientist, Florida Historical Quarterly, The Florida Anthropologist, and Southeastern Archaeology. Dr. Wheeler’s monograph, Treasure of the Calusa: the Johnson/Willcox Collection from Mound Key, Florida, is one of the few studies of the powerful Calusa tribe during the European contact period. Dr. Wheeler has worked on and directed projects throughout Florida, including excavations at Jupiter Inlet 1, Old Enterprise, the Miami Circle at Brickell Point, and the Newnan’s Lake canoe site. His academic interests include prehistoric art, zooarchaeology, wet site resources, bone and shell tool technology, prehistoric engineering and canal construction, earthwork sites, and shell mound archaeology. He has worked on numerous site stabilization and restoration projects, and has routinely dealt with issues related to the long-term management of cultural resources on publicly owned property. Dr. Wheeler has worked for the State of Florida for nine years and is currently the State Archaeologist and Chief of the Bureau of Archaeological Research.
